内容提要:
China’s housing market went through property reform in the late 1990s and dramatic housing price increase since the early 2000s, both of which significantly increase family wealth for homeowners. On one hand, housing boom makes homeowners wealthier, and they might increase consumptions including consumption for leisure. On the other hand, people have to work harder to pay back mortgage when house price is higher. In this paper we examine how homeownership and local house price increase affect individual labor supply decisions, such as labor force participation, unemployment duration, or work hours. Using the 2000, 2005, and 2010 China Census Population Survey in Shanghai, we find that the perceived wealth effect increases labor supply both at the intensive and extensive margin, and the effect is larger among those who benefited from the housing reform in the late 1990s.
